West Virginia is bordered by Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. It became the 35th state on June 2o, 1863. Don Knotts, Mary Lou Retton, and Chuck Yeager all call West Virginia home.

The cardinal is the official state bird. Cattle and apples are agricultural goods in West Virginia. West Virginia?s state flower is the Rhododendron. Charleston and Huntington are two of the largest cities in West Virginia. Mountaineers are always free is the state motto.

Like Virginia, West Virginia is named for England?s Queen Elizabeth I.
