South Dakota became a state on November 2, 1889 making it the 40th state admitted to the U.S. Constitution. The capital city is Pierre.

The ring necked pheasant is the state bird. South Dakota is bordered by Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Wyoming. Cattle, milk, and corn are part of South Dakota?s agriculture. The pasque flower is the state flower. Some large cities in South Dakota are Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Pierre, Yankton, and Vermillion.

South Dakota was named after the Sioux or Dacotah Indians.
