Maine became a state on March 15, 1820. Its capital city is Augusta. The official flower of the state is the white pine cone and tassel. The state bird is a chickadee.

Maine?s state motto is, ?Dirigo? which means I lead. Maine?s nickname is the Pine Tree State. The origin for the name of Maine is attributed to the state being a mainland. This makes it different than the one state that borders it. That state being New Hampshire.
