Portals are the grand entrance to the World Wide Web. This is a marketing term used for the first website that internet users are to see once they have logged on.

A portal site is somewhat like a directory. It has the main catalog of various websites, a search engine, forums, and a browser based email. It may also include links for news, weather, online calendars and reminders, places for chats and online shopping sites.

Popular portal sites first included AOL and now have added Yahoo.
